Śaunaka said: My son, in days long past, your father learnt all the Pūraṇa-s. O son of Lomaharṣaṇa! Is it the case that you have learnt them too?
शौनक ने कहा: मेरे बेटे, बहुत समय पहले, तुम्हारे पिता ने सभी पुराण सीखे थे। हे लोमहर्षण के पुत्र! क्या ऐसा है कि आपने भी उन्हें सीखा है?

In the Pūraṇa-s are described divine stories and accounts of the wise of the original lineage. In the past, long ago, we have heard these from your father.
पुराणों में मूल वंश के बुद्धिमानों की दिव्य कहानियाँ और वृत्तांत वर्णित हैं। अतीत में, बहुत पहले, हमने आपके पिता से ये सुना है।
From those tales, I wish to hear that of the Bhṛgu lineage. Tell us that story. We are all eager to hear.
उन कथाओं में से मैं भृगु वंश की कथा सुनना चाहता हूँ। हमें वह कहानी बताओ. हम सब सुनने को उत्सुक हैं.

सूत उवाच यदधीतं पुरा सम्यग्द्विजश्रेष्ठ महात्मभिः वैशंपायनविप्राद्यैस्तैश्चापि कथितं पुरा
Sauti said: That which was correctly learnt in ancient times by great-souled Brāhmana-s who were the best, that which was learnt and recited by the Brāhmaṇa Vaiśampāyana,
सौती ने कहा: जो प्राचीन काल में श्रेष्ठ आत्मा वाले ब्राह्मणों द्वारा सही ढंग से सीखा गया था, जो ब्राह्मण वैशम्पायन द्वारा सीखा और सुनाया गया था,

that which was correctly studied by my father and from him learnt by me, O descendant of the Bhṛgu race, hear that story of the Bhṛgu lineage, revered by the gods, Indra, Agni and the Marut-s.
जिसका मेरे पिता ने सही ढंग से अध्ययन किया था और उनसे मैंने सीखा था, हे भृगु वंश के वंशज, इंद्र, अग्नि और मरुत-देवताओं द्वारा पूजनीय भृगु वंश की वह कहानी सुनो।
O chief and great sage, I shall recite to you the history of this lineage, and related stories, as it is recounted in the Pūraṇa-s.
हे प्रमुख और महान ऋषि, मैं आपको इस वंश का इतिहास और संबंधित कहानियाँ सुनाऊंगा, जैसा कि पुराणों में वर्णित है।
Bhṛgu gave birth to a beloved son, named Cyavana Bhārgava. Cyavana had a righteous son named Pramati and Pramati, in turn, had a son named Ruru, from Ghṛtācī.
भृगु ने एक प्रिय पुत्र को जन्म दिया, जिसका नाम च्यवन भार्गव रखा गया। च्यवन को प्रमति नाम का एक धर्मात्मा पुत्र हुआ और प्रमति को घृतासी से रुरु नामक पुत्र हुआ।
From his wife Pramadvarā, Ruru had a son named Śunaka. He was righteous and learned in the Veda-s, he was your greatgrandfather.
रुरु को अपनी पत्नी प्रमद्वरा से शुनक नामक पुत्र हुआ। वह धर्मात्मा और वेदों का विद्वान था, वह आपके परदादा थे।

तपस्वी च यशस्वी च श्रुतवान्ब्रह्मवित्तमः धर्मिष्ठः सत्यवादी च नियतो नियतेन्द्रियः
He was devoted to asceticism, famous, learned in the śruti-s, truthful, righteous, wise in knowledge of the brāhman and always had control over his senses.
वह तप के प्रति समर्पित, प्रसिद्ध, श्रुति-विद्वान, सत्यवादी, धर्मात्मा, ब्राह्मण ज्ञान में बुद्धिमान और हमेशा अपनी इंद्रियों पर नियंत्रण रखने वाला था।
Śaunaka said: O son of Sūta, why was the great-souled son of Bhṛgu known as Cyavana? I am asking you, tell me.
शौनक ने कहा: हे सूतपुत्र, भृगु के महाबली पुत्र को च्यवन क्यों कहा जाता है? मैं तुमसे पूछ रहा हूं, बताओ.
Sauti replied: Bhṛgu had a beloved wife, widely known as Pulomā. She conceived from Bhṛgu's semen and a child formed in her womb.
सौति ने उत्तर दिया: भृगु की एक प्रिय पत्नी थी, जिसे व्यापक रूप से पुलोमा के नाम से जाना जाता था। भृगु के वीर्य से वह गर्भवती हुई और उसके गर्भ में एक बालक उत्पन्न हुआ।
one day, the famous and righteous Bhṛgu went out for his ablutions. It was then that a rākṣasa named Puloman came to his hermitage.
एक दिन, प्रसिद्ध और धर्मात्मा भृगु स्नान के लिए निकले। तभी पुलोमन नाम का एक राक्षस उनके आश्रम में आया।
Having entered the hermitage, he saw Bhṛgu's unblemished wife, and seeing her, he was filled with lust and lost his senses.
आश्रम में प्रवेश कर उसने भृगु की निष्कलंक पत्नी को देखा और उसे देखकर वह काम से भर गया और अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठा।
On seeing that a guest had come, the beautiful Pulomā served him with roots and fruits from the forest.
यह देखकर कि कोई अतिथि आया है, सुंदर पुलोमा ने जंगल से कंद-मूल और फल लाकर उसकी सेवा की।
O Brāhmaṇa, having seen her, the rākṣasa burned with lust and wished to carry away the unblemished woman.
हे ब्राह्मण, उसे देखकर राक्षस वासना से जलने लगा और उस निष्कलंक स्त्री को ले जाने की इच्छा करने लगा।
He went to the room where the holy fire was blazing brightly and the rākṣasa then asked the flaming fire,
वह उस कमरे में गया जहां पवित्र अग्नि बहुत तेज चमक रही थी और राक्षस ने जलती हुई अग्नि से पूछा,

शंस मे कस्य भार्येयमग्ने पृष्ट ऋतेन वै सत्यस्त्वमसि सत्यं मे वद पावक पृच्छते
"O Agni! Tell me truthfully, under oath, whose wife is she? O Pāvaka! Tell me the truth, I am asking you.
"हे अग्नि! मुझे शपथ लेकर सच-सच बताओ कि वह किसकी पत्नी है? हे पावक! मुझे सच बताओ, मैं तुमसे पूछ रहा हूं।"
This beautiful lady was earlier engaged to be my wife. But later, her father gave her to Bhṛgu, who thus committed a falsehood.
इस खूबसूरत महिला की पहले मेरी पत्नी बनने के लिए सगाई हो चुकी थी। लेकिन बाद में, उसके पिता ने उसे भृगु को दे दिया, जिसने इस प्रकार झूठ बोला।

सेयं यदि वरारोहा भृगोर्भार्या रहोगता तथा सत्यं समाख्याहि जिहीर्षाम्याश्रमादिमाम्
Tell me truly if this beautiful lady can be called Bhṛgu's wife. Since I have found her in the hermitage, I wish to carry her away.
मुझे सचमुच बताओ कि क्या इस सुन्दर स्त्री को भृगु की पत्नी कहा जा सकता है? चूँकि वह मुझे आश्रम में मिली है, इसलिए मैं उसे अपने साथ ले जाना चाहता हूँ।
My heart burns with rage that Bhṛgu should have obtained this slim-waisted woman who was my wife first."
मेरा हृदय क्रोध से जल रहा है कि भृगु को पहले इस पतली कमर वाली स्त्री को प्राप्त करना चाहिए था जो मेरी पत्नी थी।"
Thus did the rākṣasa repeatedly ask the flaming fire this uncertain question of whether the lady was Bhṛgu's wife.
इस प्रकार राक्षस ने धधकती आग से बार-बार यह अनिश्चित प्रश्न पूछा कि क्या वह महिला भृगु की पत्नी थी।
"O Agni! You are always there in every being as witness of their righteous deeds and evil ones. O wise one! Answer my question truthfully.
"हे अग्नि! आप सदैव प्रत्येक प्राणी में उनके अच्छे और बुरे कर्मों के साक्षी के रूप में मौजूद रहते हैं। हे बुद्धिमान! मेरे प्रश्न का सच्चाई से उत्तर दो।"

मत्पूर्वभार्यापहृता भृगुणानृतकारिणा सेयं यदि तथा मे त्वं सत्यमाख्यातुमर्हसि
The wrong-doer Bhṛgu abducted her, though she was my wife first. I wish to hear the truth from you.
अन्यायी भृगु ने उसका हरण कर लिया, यद्यपि वह पहले मेरी पत्नी थी। मैं आपसे सच सुनना चाहता हूं.
When I hear the truth from you about whether she is Bhṛgu's wife or not, I shall carry her away from the hermitage in your presence. Therefore, O fire, tell me the truth."
जब मैं तुमसे यह सत्य सुन लूँगा कि वह भृगु की पत्नी है या नहीं, तो तुम्हारे सामने ही उसे आश्रम से ले जाऊँगा। इसलिए, हे अग्नि, मुझे सच बताओ।"
Having heard these words, the seven-tongued fire was extremely distressed. He was afraid to lie because of the fear of a curse. At the same time, he was scared of Bhṛgu's curse.
इन शब्दों को सुनकर, सात जिह्वा वाली अग्नि अत्यंत व्यथित हुई। शाप के भय से वह झूठ बोलने से डरता था। साथ ही वे भृगु के शाप से भी भयभीत हो गये।
